Thought #1

"Do you hear the people sing..." Just one of the many quoteable lines from Broadway showtunes and musicals that I have been listening to on one of my Pandora stations this week. I am a huge fan of this type of music, and have been ever since 6th or 7th grade (thanks, Amanda Coppedge, Mandy Cash and Jeff Price!), but I never realized what interesting lyrics many of the songs have. Or maybe I have just been awakened to the epic themes in these works by the writings of John Eldredge. I am amazed that the feelings in these songs resonate so deeply in my own heart and in the heart of others, I would bet. Here are a few quotes:

"Look at me. You may think you see who I really am, but you'll never know me. Every day it's as if I play a part. Now I see if I wear a mask I can fool the world but I cannot fool my heart. Who is that girl I see staring straight back at me? When will my reflection show who I am inside? I am now in a world where I have to hide my heart and what I believe in. But somehow I will show the world what's inside my heart and be loved for who I am. Who is that girl I see staring straight back at me? Why is my reflection someone I don't know? Must I pretend that I'm someone else for all time? When will my reflection show who I am inside? There's a heart that must be free to fly, that burns with a need to know the reason why Why must we all conceal what we think, how we feel? Must there be a secret me I'm forced to hide? I won't pretend that I'm someone else for all time." (Reflection, Mulan)

"I want her paler than the moon, with eyes that shine like stars. My girl will marvel at my strength, adore my battle scars. I couldn't care less what she'll wear, or what she looks like. What do we want? A girl worth fighting for! My girl will think I have no faults, and I'm a major find. My manly ways and turn of phrase, are sure to thrill her! Wish that I had...a girl worth fighting for!" (A Girl Worth Fighting For, Mulan)
