You Have Called Me Friend

God has been teaching me so much in the past few days that it’s going to be hard to write it all out. Bear with me as I piece it all together. I have to start with a surprising verse I read in a devotion a few days ago: “The LORD confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them” (Ps. 25:14). That God communicates with me at all is awesome enough, but the idea that God would want to confide in me is unbelievable! I have typically thought of God’s communication as instructional or “profitable for doctrine [and] reproof” (2 Tim. 3:16). It never occurred to me that our omnipotent, omniscient God would want to confide in us mere humans. When I think of confiding I picture young girls whispering secrets to one another. And that’s exactly how the KJV translates this verse: “The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him.” God sees us as His friends, people He is willing to share His heart with. We’re not just His children; we are His confidantes. This understanding makes everything else He’s shared with me in the past few days even more amazing and humbling. “What is man that you are mindful of him?” (Ps. 8:4).
