A few days ago, I shared some statistics on Swaziland. Today I read a Facebook post that made these statistics a little more real. An intern at the carepoint where my sponsored children live asked the kids, "If you could have one wish, what would it be?" Many wanted to be able to go to school, or to finish school, if they were already attending. One little girl wanted to be a mother someday. But the response that stood out among the rest was the five-year-old who said, "I wish to grow up." Not "I wish to be a pilot when I grow up" or "I wish to have a big house" - "I wish to grow up."
Considering the statistic I shared earlier, that the chance of a fifteen-year-old living until he's 32 is only six percent, maybe this response is not so shocking. But children are dying and the world is sitting idly by. When a child's only wish is that he may live to be a grown-up, something has gone tragically wrong. How can we do nothing for "the least of these," these widows and orphans God commands us to serve in order to demonstrate our "true religion" (James 1:27)? I don't have any answers or even a plan for how we can help these dear little ones, but I can start by raising awareness about what's going on around the world and praying that God will raise up His servants to intervene. I hope you will join me in this.
